Community Medicine (Preventive and Social medicine) is a branch of medicine that deals with the preventive, promotive, curative and rehabilitative aspects of diseases in the community. The objective of this department is to provide a high quality training in Community Medicine by providing Competency Based Medical Education to the under graduate students enrolled in the MBBS program to create a health care professional who is globally relevant.
The Department of Community Medicine is involved in training the medical student in Phase I, Phase II, and Phase III and during internship. The other activities of the Department are to conduct basic research, conduct training programs and to provide promotive, preventive and curative health services to the community. The department provides these services through the Rural Health Training Centre (RHTC), Noolvi and the Urban Health Training Centre (UHTC), Ayodhyanagar. The HealthClinic and through the Family Adoption Program (FAP) at Adargunchi village.
The work of the Department of Community Health at JGM Medical College, Hubballi can be broadly described as follows:
- Teaching: of Undergraduate Medical Students, The subject is taught as per the NMC CBME curriculum.
- Service:
- a. Campus clinic: Caters to health needs of the students, faculty and other staff of the JGM Medical College
- b. Urban health training center at Ayodhyanagar
- c. Rural health training center at Noolvi
- d. Family adoption program at Adargunchi village
- Research: Research activities of the Department of Community Health are generally conducted in the field practice areas of the department.

- To teach and train the medical students to be community physicians who can provide comprehensive healthcare to the community.
- To sensitize and nurture the aptitude for research among the undergraduate medical students.

The facilities available in the department of Community Medicine as per the of NMC requirements.
I. In the Department
DEMO ROOM/ SEMINAR HALL:
There is one Demo room with 25 seating capacity it is well equipped with AV aids such as projector, screen, internet and white board.
PRACTICAL HALL:
For training under graduate students on the practical aspects of community medicine and public health,the laboratory is shared with the department of microbiology with a seating capacity of sixty with 60 microscopes and staining stations.
RESEARCH LAB:
The research lab has all the necessary equipment’s to conduct basic research. It also serves as a statistical cell with computer and internet facility and the statistical software to help in analyzing research data. This cell is useful for undergraduate and faculty research.
DEPARTMENT LIBRARY:
The department library has more than a hundred textbooks, journals, catalogues, and training modules that can be borrowed for referencing by students and faculty members.
MUSEUM:
The museum is shared with the departments of Microbiology and Pharmacology as per the NMC 2020 guidelines. The museum exhibits different models, specimens and chartsproviding information on the different aspects of community medicine.
FACULTY ROOMS:
The faculty members have individual fully furnished cubicles with internet LAN facilities for academic learning.
II A.Urban Health Training Centre:
The Department of Community Medicine, JGMMC is currently affiliated to one Primary Health Centre, Noolvi, Tq Hubballi and one Urban Heath Centre, AyodhyaNagar,Hubballi.
The department conducts trainings at field practice area in the urban and rural setting through these centres respectively. The department staff/faculty are posted to these centres regularly.
The Urban Health Training Center, AyodhyaNagar at Old Hubli is located approximately 7 Km away from the college campus. It caters to 4 wards of Hubli-dharwadMuncipal Corporation namely Ward numbers 61, 62, 63A and 63B, with a total population of 46489 in 9015 households according to 2022-23 survey. UPHC has all the basic clinical facilities, mini OT, essential medicines, day care facility. The centre has 13 ASHAs catering to the population and 31 Anganwadi centres. All the National health programs are executed by the PHC doctors, field staff and staff from the Department of Community Medicine JGMMC. The services provide by the Urban Health Centre are:

II B. Rural Health Training Centre:
Rural Health Training Centre (RHTC) at Primary Health Centre (PHC) Noolvi, Taluk Hubballi, is located approximately 6 kms from the JGMMC campus. It caters to a population of 27499 with 5456 households in 10 villages. It has six sub centers and 19 ASHAs.

II C. Family Adoption Program:
Is initiated and carried out in the Village Adargunchi located around 4 kms from the JGMMC campus. The Family Adoption Program(FAP) is conducted as per the NMC norms where each student adopts 2 families starting from the 1st MBBS and follows them up for the next three years.
III. JGMMC HEALTH CLINIC:
The department of Community Medicine runs a health clinic in the campus which caters to the health needs of the students as well as all staff in the campus. The clinic is open from 1.00 – 5.00 pm. OPD and day care services are available free of cost at this center.
IV. BUS:
The department has two buses, one with 42 seating capacity and the other with 33 seating capacity. These are used for commuting duringthe field visits, health camps and IEC activities.
