GOAL:
The goal of teaching undergraduate students in Physiology is to make them understand the Physiological principles and homeostatic mechanisms of normal human body, so that the students can comprehend the physiological basis of diseases.
OBJECTIVES:
A) KNOWLEDGE:At the end of the courses, the student will be able to:
- Describe the normal functioning of all organ systems, regulatory mechanisms and interactions of the various organs for well-coordinated total body function.
- Understand the basic principles, mechanisms and homeostatic control of all the functions of human body as a whole.
- Elucidate the physiological aspect of normal growth and development.
- Analyse the physiological responses and adaptation of different stresses during life processes.
- Lay emphasis on applied aspect of physiological functions underlying disease state.
- Correlate knowledge of physiology in area indicated by National Health Programs.
Acquire the following skills:
- To do the experiments for study of physiological functions.
- Interpret experimental and investigative data.
- Distinguish between normal and abnormal data derived as a result of tests which he / she performed and observed in the laboratory.
At the end of the integrated teaching the student shall acquire an integrated knowledge of organ structure and function and the regulatory mechanisms.
The Department of Physiology of KAHER’S JGMM Medical College constitutes dedicated faculty members, who are actively involved in teaching and research. Many are also active in cultural and sports activities. The department provides a good platform for MBBS course which is based on the CBME curriculum having vertical and horizontal integration. Various novel teaching and assessment methods are implemented for students to understand the normal body functions. The Students are provided with well-equipped, up to date instruments in research lab and other lab facilities to learn lab based human clinical examination and hematology. Students are provided additional facilities for learning on the E- Learning platform.

Physiology Department
The Department of Physiology is well equipped for Undergraduate students and believe in Need based and value based Teaching of Physiology. Updated Teaching Learning Methodologies are implemented in Physiology Department and learning made easy and interesting. Objective Structured Practical Examination (OSPE) and Objective Structured Clinical Examination (OSCE) are used as a part of Formative assessment.
Physiology Departmentis well-designed with excellent infrastructureincluding one demonstration hall and five well equipped Laboratories, that is Hematology Laboratory, Human Physiology Laboratory, ClinicalLaboratory, Mammalian Laboratory and Research Laboratory. The Teaching Staff undertake teaching programmes for Undergraduate students of MBBS and Physiotherapy. Overall results of the Undergraduate examinations have been good and that speaks for the quality of teaching offered by the Faculties.
Hematology Lab is well equipped with Binocular Microscopes and all the instruments required for learning the Hematologypracticals by the students.
Clinical Lab is equipped with all the instruments necessary for learning Clinical examination skills to be done on patients.
Human Lab is equipped with the instruments required for Human experiments including Computerised ECG machine, Cycle Ergometer and Mercury free Sphygmomanometers as suggested by NMC.
Mammalian lab holds all instruments related to Mammalian and Amphibian experiments and is also used for other practicals by the students.
Each laboratory has capacity to accommodate 50 students. Department also has a demonstration room with seating capacity of 50 students.
The Research lab has RMS single and Multi -channel research physiograph, computerized Helios Spirometry, ECG, EEG and HRV.
The departmental Library has approximately 100 books for reference of staff and students. We also share Computer Assisted Laboratories (CAL) with Pharmacology Department for better understanding of Amphibian Experiments.
Physiology Department undertake various academic activities for the benefit of students like Seminars, Guest lectures, Clinical discussions, Workshops and Exhibitions. We also guide and motivate the students for various Research Activities under ICMR. Also students are trained for quiz and Pedagogy competitions at National level. All the sections of the department have good internet connectivity for Academic Activities. Also, Power point presentations of lecture classes and Question Banks are made available for the students.
