Introduction

Introduction

Human Anatomy is one of the essential basic science subject that lays the foundation for the study of applied medicine. It is the scientific study of structures in the human body which includes study of macroscopic structures by dissection of cadavers and microscopic structures in histology. To understand the functioning of the human body, human anatomy also includes embryology which describes the way tissues and organs develop during embryonic life.

The Department of Anatomy at JGMM Medical College is fully equipped to impart high quality medical education by providing Competency Based Medical Education (CBME) to nurture the medical students so that they become Indian Medical Graduates and Healthcare Professionals that are globally relevant.

Department boasts of having a well-illuminated and spacious Dissection Hall with enough cadavers for dissection, Histology Laboratory for microscopic study of various organs and an Anatomy Museum which includes specimens of all regions including Embryology and Pathological specimens in addition to Embryology Models, Charts and Radiographs.

Department consists of well qualified faculty members which are actively involved in academics as well as research activities imparting the knowledge of human anatomy and also orient the budding doctors so that they correlate well the knowledge of anatomy to various clinical conditions.

Objectives of The Department

  1. To impart high quality medical education by implementing Competency Based Medical Education and conduct various Continued Medical Education programs for training students as well as faculty members.
  2. To motivate faculty members as well as students in various research activities and provide platform for advanced research activities and innovations.
  3. To impart value based medical education and all qualities of Indian Medical Graduate in the minds of young doctors so that they serve the humanity for a better tomorrow.

Anatomy Dissection Hall

The dissection hall is situated in the ground floor of the B block in the Anatomy department and spreads over an area of 325 sq.m. It is well-illuminated and ventilated and can accommodate 150 students at any given time. The hall is equipped with audio-visual aids to facilitate the demonstration of dissection videos and briefing sessions prior to the students’ dissection for a particular day. The dissection hall has designated areas for small group teaching apart from the table teaching during the dissection hours. These teaching activities will be further enhanced by the use of articulated skeletons and X-ray viewing boxes that are an integral part of the hall. The east-end of the hall houses the anteroom with storage capacity for all the 150 students. The west-end of the hall has the embalming room and storage area for preservation of the cadavers.

Anatomy Museum

A well-illuminated and ventilated museum is situated in the ground floor of the B block in the Anatomy department and spreads over an area of 150 sq.m. It has a varied display of wet mounted specimens, models, articulated skeletons, bones and charts. The mounted specimens, 150 in number, include the dissected parts of all the regions of the body along with developmental (embryology) specimens. Added attraction is the display of specimens of the various pathological conditions which help in better understanding of clinical anatomy. This is the need of the hour keeping pace with the Competency Based Medical Education. The gross anatomy and embryology models along with the articulated skeletons, bones and charts facilitate the understanding of regional anatomy, embryology and osteology respectively. The museum can accommodate 35 students at any given time and has designated areas for small group teaching. The x-ray viewing areas further help in teaching radiology and sectional anatomy to the students.
